Running

(and cool links)

I started running again this week. I haven't really done anything real for running in a few years, since around the time of my knee surgery and recovery. I would do a mile or two on the treadmill every four to six months and that would be about it. Running was just an activity that wasn't easy to do or schedule or manage (for weekend walks the culprit is usually the huge backpack).

I normally do the Corporate Challenge, because it is local and free through work and pretty low key. Last year I was sick and the year before that I walked the entire thing in a pretty abyssmally slow time. There (if my memory serves) was also a bit of a clothing snafu at least once. Uncomfortable clothing makes for poor performance.

I treadmilled on Tuesday. Part of my joyous day off recovering from Rhode Island airport-related travel. This morning a look at the weather had me in shorts and a T jogging (and walking) outside. I had no idea how many miles, but I at least knew the roads. I tried four or five different google map directions to attempt to get my route mapped for mileage. Then I found this. Map everything! My normal route to MIT from work is 2.79mi! To Enochs: 1.79 (don't know what is up with the 79s!), and the walk-jog this morning: 1.94.

Not bad for a morning's work.

You'll also prob. get a kick out of this site:

Not bad. The main advantage of the first site is that you don't need to double click. A single click does it. The caloric info from the gmap pedo seems a little off. The program I use put it between 180 and 200 for the route I did this morning and theirs shows it at 233. Not a huge difference, but significant.

I just want to be able to figure out a route before I leave the house or figure out the mileage after I have gotten home. Both of these allow me to do that (though I like the option for a tinyurl or a printout).

I certainly wouldn't mind (when it's not snowy or icy) trying to get together for some gentle training runs. I'm trying to figure out whether my knee has stopped giving me trouble or not.
